It seems that, on average, tourists spend more than 6 days in the Marche, staying there longer than in any other Italian region.

The Marche region has also one of the highest life expectancy rate in Italy.

The rural hinterland

The excellence of the Marche region was even recognized by Touring Club Italiano, an Italian non-profit tourist association that awards the Bandiera Arancione (literally “Orange Flag”).

The “Orange Flag” is given to rural hinterland municipalities that were noteworthy for environmental protection and cultural heritage, for street furniture, for a special hospitality, for the efficiency of transport services and accommodation facilities, for food and wine selection and for organizing events and shows.

In 2009, the the Marche region obtained 18 “Orange Flags”:

  • 7 in the province of Macerata;
  • 4 in the province of Pesaro Urbino;
  • 4 in the province of Ancona;
  • 2 in the province of Ascoli Piceno;
  • 1 in the province of Fermo.
